The Falcon 9 narrowly\u00a0missed a successful test landing after one of the landing legs failed to keep the rocket upright.<\/p>\n<p>First reports across Twitter suggested the rocket came down too fast, damaging one of the legs, but shortly thereafter, Elon tweeted the following\u00a0update.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">However, that was not what prevented it being good. Touchdown speed was ok, but a leg lockout didn&#39;t latch, so it tipped over after landing.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/688816554306191360?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 17, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Just over an hour later, Musk was back on Twitter with this delightfully upbeat assessment:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Well, at least the pieces were bigger this time! Won&#39;t be last RUD, but am optimistic about upcoming ship landing. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/w007TccANJ\">pic.twitter.com\/w007TccANJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/688837706005131264?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 17, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The following video originally released through Elon&#8217;s Instagram shows the Falcon 9 rocket successfully returning to the droneship at sea, but\u00a0ends up\u00a0in a fiery explosion after the rocket tips over due to a faulty landing leg.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gogyixLtP38?rel=0\" width=\"853\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX electrified the world just before Christmas when it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teslarati.com\/spacex-completes-historic-rocket-landing\/\" target=\"_blank\">successfully returned the first stage<\/a> of an updated Falcon 9 rocket to a landing site near\u00a0Cape Canaveral, Florida. Sunday&#8217;s\u00a0mission used a less powerful version of the Falcon 9 which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teslarati.com\/spacex-ready-relaunch-jan-17-will-land-rocket-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\">cannot carry enough fuel<\/a> to return to its point of origin.<\/p>\n<p>There will be future attempts\u00a0to land at sea.
