It’s not that it’s going to be a major downgrade, but they still will be selling the s/x at a starting price close to 2x the 3.. It has to be a downgrade, otherwise the s won’t sell another one.
It may be better for some people that just want the smaller size etc, but overall it’ll be a lower tier car.. Shorter range, less power, maybe not all wheel drive, ( at that price anyway), lower end interior trim, etc.
Not that it’ll be a bad car by any means, just like a bmw 3 series is still a beauty car, but it’s no M class.

Jen. I was half wishing I would get an invite, but living in Australia I was half hoping I wouldn’t. Flight costs and logistics just too hard. In the end the choice was easy as I missed out. Looking forward to the live stream.

I don’t think it’s going to be an obvious downgrade. The Model S is half as expensive as the Roadster was. Do you consider the Model S to be a downgrade from the Roadster? How many people who owned Roadsters never got a Model S?

The Roadster was generation 1. The S and X are generation 2. The Model 3 and Y (and maybe others) will be generation 3.

I’m expecting the Model 3 to have the hardware to be fully autonomous right from the gitgo, and for it all to be switched on within a year of the first cars being shipped.

I think the Model 3 might drop the superior sound system and premium interior lights of the Model S… The range and acceleration won’t be as good as the Model S. Other than that, I can’t think of much else that I expect to be inferior with the Model 3.

As much as I agree to some point, spread the wealth, help out the guys that really “need” this car cause we can’t afford the s/x, but at the same time, this model 3 wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the huge number of model s/x purchasers. They funded this car with their 25%~ profit margin funding r&d, gigafactory, etc.
So they are rewarded with the option to get the car slightly earlier.
Really I’d say a good majority of the current owners wouldn’t “downgrade” from a usually higher tier ( average sale price of over 100k, when based at approx 70k) car.
Some significantly upgraded their current cars to get a tesla, and may sell their s to be more comfortable paying for the 3, but assuming the more budget oriented paid 70 (63 after tax incentive) drove for a while and now it’s worth 50~, why would they “downgrade” to save 15 grand ish..
I bet some of the richer ones will buy a second vehicle for their wives, kids, etc, but I’m going to guess approx 30% on the higher end. So that’s about 40,000 cars as of now, maybe 6 months- a year max of backlog..
Yea it sucks for us, but I’m just happy they funded tesla to do what they’ve done.
We get an affordable probably still amazing car…. And still are considered early adopters in many ways..
