Some considered the possibility of the Robovan, which was unveiled back in 2024.

Elon Musk hinted at what Tesla’s new vehicle will be just a day or so after he essentially confirmed the company is developing something that will eventually be available for consumers.

Earlier this week, Musk said that something “way cooler than a minivan” was on the way from Tesla after a fan posted on X that the company needed to build something for larger families. Requesting this type of vehicle has been a move of many Tesla fans over the years, but now, the urgency is even higher for this type of car because of the company’s decision to sunset the Model X.

Following reports of Musk’s plans to build something that will be cooler than a minivan, speculation consisted of what could possibly be on the way.

Tesla has teased a CyberSUV for quite a while, and there were even some clay models built by the company that were strategically placed in a promotional video.

After Musk’s post earlier this week, many considered the possibility that the Tesla CEO was potentially talking about the Roadster, which is slated for an unveiling (again) next month. Some considered the possibility of the Robovan, which was unveiled back in 2024.

However, a new post from Musk seems to indicate that it will be a new project altogether. After one follower of Musk’s said:

“If Tesla makes a car with 3 rows of seats, each with its own pair of doors so nobody has to climb over anybody else to get to their seat, they will create a baby boom the likes of which we haven’t seen in 80 years.”

Musk’s reply was simple but definitely shed more insight into the company’s plans, as he said:

“Noted.”

Musk’s simple one-word answer might be enough to essentially expect something large, like a full-sized SUV. This would be an incredible addition to the Tesla lineup, especially as the Model X is going away.

Even the Model X is not quite big enough, and not comparable to vehicles like the Chevrolet Tahoe, so a three-row, six-door SUV might be exactly what Tesla fans want.

It certainly does not sound like Tesla is planning to launch the Model Y L in the U.S., at least not exclusively, or use that car, which is currently built in China, to solve the needs of a larger family.

Tesla gives big hint that it will build Cyber SUV, smaller Cybertruck

It seems the time has certainly come for Tesla to answer the call of what consumers want. This has long been requested, and although the company’s sights are ultimately set on achieving full autonomy, there is still a need for larger families, and a full-size SUV could be a great addition for Tesla as it moves into the second quarter of 2026.

The Boring Company President Steve Davis has shared the most likely first real-world use for Tesla’s Robovan.

As per the executive, the vehicle will be used to move large crowds through Las Vegas during major events.

Tesla Robovan for high-demand events

During a feature with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Boring Company President Steve Davis stated that the Tesla Robovan will be used in Sin City once the Vegas Loop expands across the Strip and downtown and the fleet grows to about 1,200 Teslas.

At that scale, Robovans would primarily be deployed during predictable surges, such as game days and large shows, when many riders are traveling to the same destination at the same time.

“The second you have four (passengers) and you have to start stopping, the best thing you can do is put your smallest vehicle in, which is a car. But if you know people are going to the stadium because of a game, you’ll know an hour before, two hours before, that a lot of people are going to a game or a Sphere show, if you are smart about it, that’s when you put a high occupancy vehicle in, that’s when you put the Robovan in,” Davis said.

Vegas Loop expansion

Steve Davis’s Robovan comment comes amid The Boring Company’s efforts to expand the Vegas Loop’s airport service. Phase 1 of rides to Harry Reid International Airport began last month, allowing passengers to travel from existing Loop stations such as Resorts World, Encore, Westgate, and the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Phase 2 will add a 2.2-mile dual-direction tunnel from Westgate to Paradise Road. That section is expected to open within months and will allow speeds of up to 60 mph on parts of the route, while expanding the fleet to around 160 vehicles.

Future phases are expected to extend tunnels closer to airport terminals and add multiple stations along University Center Drive. At this point, the system’s fleet is expected to grow close to 300 Teslas. The final phase, an underground airport station, was described by Davis as the system’s “holy grail.” This, however, has no definite timeframe as of yet.

It appears that Tesla is indeed considering an RV in its future pipeline, though the vehicle that would be converted for the purpose would be quite interesting. This is, at least, as per recent comments by a Tesla executive on social media platform X.

Robovan as an RV

Tesla’s vice president of AI and Autopilot software, Ashok Elluswamy, hinted at the linitiative in a reply to Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan, who called for a startup to build RVs with Full Self-Driving capabilities. In his reply, Elluswamy simply stated “On it,” while including a photo of Tesla’s autonomous 20-seat people mover.

Tesla unveiled the Robovan in October 2024 at the “We, Robot” event. The vehicle lacks a steering wheel and features a low floor for spacious interiors. The vehicle, while eclipsed by the Cybercab in news headlines, still captured the imagination of many, as hinted at by X users posting AI-generated images of Robovan RV conversions with beds, kitchens and panoramic windows on social media platforms. One such render by Tesla enthusiast Mark Anthony reached over 300,000 views on X.

Elon Musk on the Robovan

Elon Musk addressed the Robovan’s low profile in October 2024, stating the van uses automatic load-leveling suspension that raises or lowers based on road conditions. The system maintains the futuristic look while handling uneven pavement, Musk wrote on X. The CEO also stated that the Robovan is designed to be very airy inside, which would be great for an RV.

“The view from the inside is one of extreme openness, with visibility in all directions, although it may appear otherwise from the outside. The unusually low ground clearance is achieved by having an automatic load-leveling suspension that raises or lowers, based on smooth or bumpy road conditions,” Musk stated.

Elluswamy’s response on X suggests that Tesla is considering a Robovan RV conversion, though it would be interesting to see how the company will make the vehicle capable of reaching campsites. The Robovan has a very low ground clearance, after all, and campsites tend to be in unpaved areas.

Tesla says on its Robotaxi app that it is working on enabling “accessibility rides” that would give the handicapped and disabled the ability to hail a Robotaxi to get to an appointment.

While Robotaxi will obviously revolutionize the way we travel for our work commutes, daily activities, and other things, but there is true potential to enable serious change for those who cannot drive.

Autonomous transportation would make life easier for those who are unable to obtain a driver’s license. Of course, with today’s ride-sharing platforms, things are much easier than they once were.

However, rides from Uber and Lyft, while plentiful, always have an opportunity to be unavailable in some regions, especially rural ones, due to a lack of drivers.

Robotaxi aims to solve this problem through autonomous transportation, a technology that Tesla has been developing for years.

However, new language in the Robotaxi app shows that Tesla is working on a solution for people who need rides for medical reasons, and it uses a picture of the Robovan to hammer this point home:

Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that this was a focus by responding, “Absolutely,” to the embedded post on X above. Tesla said it is developing its own “wheelchair-accessible vehicle,” also known as a WAV.

This is likely the Robovan, which was unveiled on October 10 at the Robotaxi event last year:

Tesla unveils the Robovan at ‘We, Robot’ event

It is pretty interesting to see two Musk ventures working on solutions for those who are physically impaired or have other disabilities. With Tesla, Robotaxi will unlock immense potential for those who are unable to drive themselves, addressing a genuine need in today’s world.

Additionally, Neuralink is continuing its development of technology to fight against various physical and mental disabilities. A great question to ask is, “Which will be more beneficial for humans?”

Elon Musk has posted a hilarious response to a Babylon Bee article that announced a hypothetical Tesla van launch “that will fit all his kids.”

The Tesla CEO recently welcomed his 13th child into the world, proving that he is doing all he can to personally combat his fear of population collapse.

The birth of his most recent child has become a bit of a spectacle. However, many are joking that Tesla is going to launch a van, like satirical news outlet Babylon Bee’s hypothetical unveiling of the Model H, a Homeschooler van “that will fit all his kids.”

But Musk had a hilarious response to the story, posted by the Bee on X, and it involved one of Tesla’s most recently unveiled products: the Robovan.

Musk’s response went like this:

The Robovan was unveiled as a surprise at Tesla’s Robotaxi Event, titled “We, Robot” on October 10 last year. The Robovan is a 20-person, fully autonomous vehicle that Musk said will enable anything from hauling around a team of Little Leaguers to being used as a cargo van that will drop goods off in a large city.

It seems it can also be suitable for those who have a lot of kids.

Musk said about the Robovan at the event:

“It would be very good for goods transport in a city, or transport of up to 20 people at a time. It’s going to solve for high density, so if you’re looking to take a sports team somewhere or really get the cost of transportation down to $0.05 or $0.10 cents per mile, then you could use the Robovan.”

The vehicle was inspired by 1930s-era Art Deco trains, Musk confirmed just after the event.

Although Tesla has not officially landed on the name “Robovan,” as it has also filed trademark applications for the phrase “Cyberbus,” the vehicle is still very much in the plans for the company.

Tesla appears to be deciding between names for ‘Robovan’

As it is working on solving autonomous passenger ride-hailing with the Cybercab, the Robovan or Cyberbus will be a suitable option for those larger groups, enabling sustainable and efficient transportation for those who travel in packs or those who need the cargo space to haul goods.

Elon Musk recently gave his approval for Tesla vehicles for bigger families.

A few people on X recently brought Tesla’s need to roll out bigger cars for bigger families to Elon Musk. X user @realpeteyb shared the story of his latest visit to a Tesla store.

“I was at my neighborhood Tesla store yesterday and wanted to make sure again, that the X model is not big enough for my family… It isn’t,” Petey B said in his X post.

Another X user @SeibtNaoimi shared Petey B’s post, commenting: “We need big Teslas for big families!”

“Tesla has proven to be the most efficient and popular car on the market. But if we want more babies and repopulate the West, we need bigger models to support the lifestyle, she added, tagging Elon Musk.

Musk read Naomi Seibt’s X post and simply replied,OK.

Bigger Teslas for Everyone

Petey B and Naomi Seibt perfectly explained why Tesla needs to launch bigger cars. However, Western countries aren’t the only ones that need bigger Teslas. Bigger Teslas would be in demand in other regions worldwide as well.

When Musk first mentioned the Tesla van, I knew it would be the Tesla I aimed to buy. Coming from a Filipino-American family, I knew I’d need a bigger Tesla. While growing up in New Jersey, I was surrounded by family, and it just kept growing through the years with more babies, cousins, visiting relatives, etc.

Needless to say, we never really fit in one car. We liked taking big family trips, and it would take at least three vehicles to transport all of us. At one point, we tried renting one big van to head to the Poconos, and it wasn’t big enough because of everyone’s luggage. We celebrated each others milestones too and often showed up for each other on special occasions, so we also took up a lot of parking space during graduations, family dinners, etc.

So, the idea of a bigger Tesla is great for more people than Musk might think. It isn’t just about having more babies, either. Now that I have a family, I realize that more babies also takes more people to care for them. In the Philippines, where I live now, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and even cousins are more involved in family activities—and they all need to fit in at least one or two cars.

Last year, my parents and two sisters visited the Philippines, and we totaled seven people, including my husband, our son, and myself. Our car fit approximately seven people, but I had to borrow my uncle’s van during my parents and sisters’ stay so we could travel the Philippines AND carry our belongings.

When Tesla launched the Robovan, I was a little sad because it was more like a Tesla bus. A Tesla that’s a little bigger than the Tesla Model X or Model Y and smaller than the Tesla Robovan with plenty of cargo space would be great for all Tesla customers with bigger families anywhere in the world.

The Teslarati team would appreciate hearing from you. If you have any tips, contact me at maria@teslarati.com or via Twitter @Writer_01001101.

Tesla appears to be deciding between several names for what CEO Elon Musk called the “Robovan” at the We, Robot event earlier this month.

Tesla shocked viewers and attendees at the event as it rolled out a futuristic, 14-seat fully autonomous van following the first public appearance of the Robotaxi at the unveiling event it held earlier in October.

Musk called it the “Robovan” at the event, but it seems like Tesla is not set on the name, according to new patent and trademark filings the company submitted just a few days ago.

Tesla unveils the Robovan at ‘We, Robot’ event

Tesla has submitted trademarks for “Robobus” and “Cybervan” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, hinting that “Robovan” might not be the exact name the company uses when it eventually produces and sells the vehicle, which is expected to be several years into the future.

Musk confirmed shortly after the We, Robot event that the van it unveiled is inspired by Art Deco trains, undoubtedly explaining its look, although it has a very futuristic twist.

“The future should look like the future,” Musk said.

Musk said the Robovan will be a highly efficient option for large groups or those who need to haul cargo.

“It would be very good for goods transport in a city or transport of up to 20 people at a time,” he said. “It’s going to solve for high density, so if you’re looking to take a sports team somewhere or really get the cost of transportation down to $0.05 or $0.10 cents per mile, then you could use the Robovan.”

However, there are many things that need to be achieved before the Robovan/Robobus/Cybervan is even offered. The vehicle has no steering wheel, pedals, or even any area that would allow a human driver for manual operation, so Tesla is going to have to achieve full autonomy before then.

Until then, the Robovan, or whatever it might end up being called, has a long way to go. However, we could see it land in Boring Co. tunnels sooner than on public streets.

Tesla unveiled its Robotaxi, Optimus, and Robovan designs last week at an event on October 10, setting forth a new chapter in the company’s story as it charges toward artificial intelligence and self-driving supremacy.

However, some were unimpressed by what Tesla brought out last Thursday at the “We, Robot” event, which took place at Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles.

One of those people was the director of “I, Robot,” Alex Proyas, who claimed Musk and Tesla ripped off the designs he used in his 2004 movie that showed the dangerous possibilities that come with mass-producing robots.

People were not impressed with Proyas’s claims, as several people said he was reaching for some kind of attention following the event.

Some said Proyas simply designed what he did for the movie on computers, while Musk should get the real credit because Tesla built the somewhat similar designs.

However, pickups, sedans, and crossovers in the vast global automotive market all tend to look the same as well, but there are no true claims of stealing those looks.

Proyas was not the only I, Robot production team member to cast some stones in Musk’s direction. Matt Granger, who worked as an assistant on the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter, also gave a less PG version of what was relatively the same message.

He told Musk that he had an “utter lack of creativity” for the designs. This post has since been deleted.

The claim that Musk and Tesla took the designs from the movie is an interesting one, but it also shows how much attention the event gathered. The Cybercab, as Tesla calls it, is based on the design of the Cybertruck, and it is evident that the all-electric pickup is one of the true inspirations for the design.

Pick up your Cybertruck accessories here: https://shop.teslarati.com/collections/tesla-cybertruck-accessories

Optimus was unveiled several years ago and it is, at least in our opinion, hard to develop a humanoid robot that would look very different from that of a human being.

The Cybervan was certainly a continuing trend of what Tesla has tried to do, which is to change how the road truly looks.

“The future should look like the future,” Musk said. The other electric vans on the market, like the Ford E-Transit and Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, are more traditional.

This shows Tesla was truly not interested in doing anything close to that.

Following the unveiling of Tesla’s Cybercab and Robovan last week, the company’s lead designer has shared a few words about the design of the unique autonomous vehicles—including the fact that the Robovan could “possibly” have been designed to be small enough to fit inside of a Boring Company tunnel.

In a video recap of the We, Robot event shared by The Kilowatts on Sunday, host Ryan Levenson interviews Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen while sitting in the new Robovan. When Levenson asks if the Robovan’s size is small enough to fit into a Boring Company tunnel, the designer responds with a cheeky, enthusiastic “possibly,” though he stops short of actually saying whether or not that’s part of Tesla’s plans.

“[The Robovan] solves all the needs from, basically when you have multiple groups, if you need to carry boxes, packages, and all the needs for mass transportation that aren’t really solved now,” von Holzhausen said.

Levenson also asks how the two vehicles are different, to which the lead designer explains that the unique two-seater design of the Cybercab was chosen because 95 percent of ride-shares are taking just one to two people.

“Robotaxi is designed for, like generally most rides, and this is designed for when you have more than six to eight people and you need more. Or for mass transportation—school buses, regular buses in the inner city, wedding party, you know, whatever,” von Holzhausen adds.

The interview is sandwiched between Levenson’s larger coverage of the Cybercab and Robovan unveiling event, which was held on Thursday, and he also goes on to talk about being able to use Waymo already in San Francisco.

You can watch the full interview with Franz below, as shared by The Kilowatts.

Teslarati was also fortunate enough to be in attendance for the event, and you can check out our photos of the Robovan as well as our first full ride in the Tesla Cybercab below.

“One of the things we wanted to do, and we’ve seen this with the Cybertruck, is we wanted to change the look of the roads,” Musk said of the Robovan’s design during the event.

Following the unveiling of the Robovan, Elon Musk said that the inspiration behind its design came from art deco buses, again echoing his classic goal to “make the future look like the future.”

Musk has also explained that the Robovan has unusually low ground clearance due to an automatic load-leveling suspension system that raises or lowers based on the smoothness of the road conditions.

The Tesla Cybertruck was a vehicle with so much shock factor that the Robovan, which does not even look like it has wheels, was almost not surprising at all. With such design comes a lot of criticism and mockery, of course, as the Robovan still looks quite unlike any other vehicle on the road today. But as per Elon Musk, the Robovan’s appearance was inspired by some of the most stunning machines ever made.

Being a fully autonomous vehicle, the Robovan does not have a windshield, nor does it have a driver’s cockpit. It’s essentially an aerodynamic box with a large space for seating inside. Musk assured the attendees of “We, Robot” that the Robovan’s production version would really look like the vehicle that made its appearance at the event.

In a later post on X, Musk described the Robovan as a “futuristic art deco bus.” The post incited a lot of responses on social media, with many asking the CEO about the inspiration for the vehicle’s design. Musk was pretty open in his response, stating that the Robovan was inspired by Art Deco trains, which became popular in the 1930s. The CEO’s comment seems accurate as the Robovan features similar design cues to Art Deco trains like the Mercury from 1936.

The Tesla Robovan may not look like any other production vehicle on the road today, but this is likely by design. As noted by industry watchers on social media, Tesla appears to have designed the Robovan to work in various areas, from public roads to Boring Company tunnels. If deployed on systems like the Las Vegas Loop, for example, the Robovan would likely be able to accommodate large numbers of passengers due to its size and 20-person capacity.

While social media users have expressed concerns about the Robovan’s capability to handle potholes and other imperfections on the road, CEO Elon Musk has noted on X that the upcoming vehicle would be fitted with an automatic load-leveling suspension system that raises or lowers the Robovan based on smooth or bumpy road conditions. This should make the vehicle quite comfortable on public roads.
